Elephants have wonderful memories - which is useful as they can liver for over 70 years. If an elephant is separated from a friend and they don't see each other for a number of years, when they do meat again they instantly recognize each other. There is evidence to suggest that they can even remember humans and bear grudges against people that have done them in the past. 

Elephants also feel sadness. If a friend or a member of their family dies, they actually show grief. It is thought that elephants can remember trauma from their childhoods right into their adult life that can affect their behavior and even turn them into hooligans.

Dolphins love to talk. Just like people telephone or text each other, dolphins use high-pitched sounds to communicate with other dolphins a long way off. Humans can only hear these sounds using special equipment. 

Dolphins live in families called 'pods'. Female dolphins whistle to their babies continuously for three days after they are born to help them recognize the sound of their mothers.

Dolphins also use sound to navigate and to locate food - this is called 'echolocation'. They emit clicks using the 'melon' (their rounded foreheads) - the sounds bounce off objects around them and the dolphins 'hear' the echoes through their lower jaws.

From the age of one, Koko a Gorilla living in San Francisco Zoo in the USA, has been learning how to communicate with people. It is claimed that Koko can understand around 2000 spoken words in English and can sign herself over 1000 words using American sign language. Koko's IQ is thought to be between 70 and 95, which is pretty smart considering a normal IQ for a person is around 100. Koko is now 37 years old and her favorite pastimes include playing with dolls and drawing.

A Man's best friend Fact 16

Dogs can be the most devoted friends a person can have. This can certainly said of 'Bobby', a Sky terrier, who belonged to a man called John Gray. 

John Gray was a nightwatchman in Edinburgh, Scotland. When he died in 1858, John was buried in Greyfriars churchyard and, for 14 years after his death, Bobby visited his master's grave every day, sometimes sitting at it for hours at a time. When Bobby himself died, he was buried as near to his master as was allowed - by the gate, just inside the churchyard. A statue and fountain were put up in Bobby's memory.
